Dr Janitha Jayawardana (Dr JJ) was born in 1985 and immigrated from Sri Lanka with his parents in the late 1980s to call Australia home. Dr JJ grew up with his family in the outback of Western Australia, and moved to Perth to complete his tertiary education. In 2008, Dr JJ obtained his primary medical qualification with honors at the University of Western Australia. From 2009 until 2012, Dr JJ worked in major metropolitan hospitals in Perth gaining valuable experience in the various specialties of medicine, surgery (including ENT) and critical care, and was awarded the prestigious 'GoatcherIntern of the Year' award at Royal Perth Hospital.
Dr JJ moved to Melbourne in 2013 to sub-specialise in ENT surgery as part of Australia's highly competitive and rigorous advanced surgical training program. During this time, Dr JJ spent six years working at various major metropolitan centres including the Royal Children's Hospital, Royal Victorian Eye & Ear Hospital, Austin Hospital, Monash, Alfred Hospital and Barwon Health (Geelong). In 2018 he passed his final examinations and was later admitted into the Royal Australian College of Surgeons as a fellow in Ear, Nose and Throat Surgery.
In 2019 until the pandemic, he spent time in regional Queensland at a high volume practices servicing the needs of the community in all aspects of ENT as a consultant surgeon. Of particular note is Dr JJ’s with local organisations to delivery high quality care to the indigenous population in the Isaac and Whitsunday regions.
During 2021 to 2022 Dr JJ underwent further sub-specialty training in Otology, Auditory Implants and Skull Base Surgery with Assoc Professor Phillip Bird in New Zealand. During this year, he gained valuable tertiary level skills in treating patients in this field under a high operative load. As a result of this, Dr JJ currently has a tertiary public appointment with the Otology service at the Royal Victorian Eye & Ear Hospital where he regularly operates on patients with complex conditions of the external auditory canal , tympanic membrane, middle ear and mastoid. Dr JJ is also a member of the Victorian Cochlear Implant Program (VCIP) and regularly attends the multidisciplinary meeting, regularly performs cochlear implantation surgery as well as participating in various clinical research. He also regularly is involved in the Victorian Aboriginal Health Service (VAHS) in Fitzroy. With the public hospital appointment, Dr JJ regularly engages in teaching of ENT trainees and overseas surgeons (fellows).Whilst Otology and Cochlear implantation is his chosen subspecialty in a public hospital where the complexity level is quite high, the vast majority of patients that Dr JJ sees and surgically treats in private practice is from a broad variety of the above listed subspecialties ranging from Pediatrics to Rhinology and Sleep Apnea.
